Land Rover Discovery 3 vs Discovery 4: Which Should You Buy?

The Land Rover Discovery 3 (2004–2009) and Discovery 4 (2009–2017) are two of the most capable and practical family off-roaders ever made. Both share a fundamentally similar platform but differ in refinement, technology and running costs.

The Discovery 3 introduced the Integrated Body Frame (IBF) architecture — a massive step forward in rigidity and refinement over the Discovery 2. Powered primarily by the 2.7-litre TDV6 diesel engine, it offered excellent torque and reasonable fuel economy for its size.

Key strengths include its legendary off-road ability via Terrain Response, a genuinely capable air suspension system, and a cavernous seven-seat interior. On the downside, air suspension failures and electrical gremlins are common on older examples — always check carefully before buying.

Land Rover Discovery 4

The Discovery 4 took the same bones and added significant refinement. The upgraded 3.0-litre SDV6 engine is smoother and more powerful. Interior quality improved noticeably, with better materials and updated technology including rear entertainment options.

The Terrain Response system was refined, and the Discovery 4 feels more car-like to drive on road whilst losing none of its off-road ability.

Which Should You Buy?

Budget under £15,000? A well-maintained Discovery 3 offers incredible value. Budget £18,000–£28,000? The Discovery 4 HSE represents arguably the sweet spot of used Land Rover Discovery ownership — capable, comfortable, and well-specified.

Whichever you choose, budget for maintenance and always buy from a specialist dealer with documented history.
